“This team must be the best. Every team I play on, it is the same way. If the team is no good, they will say Pelé is no good.”
June 11, 1975, Midtown Manhattan. Brasil’s great Pelé — the world’s most celebrated soccer player, as well as its most mythological figure — signed the biggest contract in team sports history when he agreed to join the New York Cosmos for $1.67 million per year. In America, it was a cultural happening. Over 200 reporters showed up at the Hunt Room within the “21” Club to get an eyeful of greatness. Nobody realized it at the time, but when Pelé debuted four days later he opened the floodgates for the sport in the U.S.
Throwing back to 1975, the year Pelé hit the Big Apple!
