"It was like death,” the champ said. “Closest thing to dyin’ that I know of.”
There was a lot going on in the lead-up to the “Thrilla in Manila” — racial tensions, political differences, religious underpinnings and of course, a bitter mutual hatred between the greatest competitors in boxing’s storied history. Muhammad Ali was nearly dismissive of Joe Frazier heading in to the final chapter. Frazier, who had humbled Ali four years earlier at Madison Square Garden yet lost the rematch in 1974, took note. That was the backdrop of the trilogy between the fight game’s greatest rivals. Tied one apiece, they came in as equals in the eyes of the fight world. And here Ali took note — to be considered “The Greatest,” there could be no equals.
Officially licensed by Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier.
