“What it came down to in Manila wasn’t the heavyweight championship of the world. They were fighting for the championship of each other.” –Boxing writer, Jerry Izenberg
As giants in the golden age of heavyweights, people forget that Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier collided as mortal men. Yet because they tried to ruin each other on three separate occasions between 1971 and 1975 in the boxing ring, they ended up immortalizing one another. The third and final fight was the payoff to the greatest rivalry in sports.
It occurred on Oct. 1, 1975, in Manila. It was dubbed the “Thrilla in Manila.” What happened that night was the stuff of legends.
Officially licensed by Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier.
