“After the fifth goal, even I wanted to cheer for him.” –Sigge Parling of Sweden on the great Pele, after the 1958 World Cup Final

Want to know how magical Pelé was from the start? As a kid in the summer of 1950, Pelé watched his father weep as Brazil came up short in the World Cup against Uruguay, and he made a vow to his dad right then and there: He wouldn’t allow that to happen when he made it there. In 1958, at just 17 years old, the phenom Pelé made good. He scored twice in the World Cup Final to help Brazil beat Sweden, breaking a couple of records that day, as well as the hearts of the Swedish faithful on their own turf.

From there? He became the biggest superstar soccer had ever known. Throwing back to that breakthrough moment in Sweden, 1958, when Pelé made a name.
