The thing is, in 1956 the University of San Francisco Dons basketball team – after shocking the world by winning the national championship the previous season – weren’t fooling anybody. Not with 6-foot-10 Bill Russell patrolling the paint. Not with his shot-blocking ability, his dominance on the glass, his scoring prowess from inside and his command of the team. Russell was a man among boys that season, giving rise to legend in leading the Dons to a perfect 29-0 regular season while wearing the bullseye squarely on their backs.

Nobody was going to touch USF in Russell’s final season. The Dons cruised through the NCAA tournament and won a second title, while solidifying their places in the annals of college basketball’s greatest teams.

Russell? National Player of the Year. First-Team All-American. WCC Player of the Year. And incoming captain of the 1956 Olympic team.
