“For the benefit of the uninitiated, Jackie Robinson, 180 pounds and 6-foot tall, age 20, ran, passed and kicked a football all over a lot of Pasadena Junior College’s opponents last season.” –LA Times, 1939
By the time Jackie Robinson took the football field for the UCLA Bruins in 1939, his reputation as the “Pasadena Flash” preceded him. Robinson played halfback for the Bruins that year and was deemed a certified triple threat, living up to billing by averaging 12.2 yards per carry that season. Want to talk about a generational athlete? Robinson was a four-sport star for the Bruins, as he also broke records in the long jump in track and field, ran the hardwood in basketball, and of course, donned the baseball uniform too.
The roots of the most significant athlete ever ran strongly UCLA blue and gold. Our super soft gray UCLA Football 1939 hoody celebrating Jackie’s time on the gridiron in Los Angeles, all part of our Campus Legends Collection!
Officially licensed by UCLA and Jackie Robinson.
