“We can do it together!”
That was the slogan for the Seattle Mariners inaugural season in 1977, a magical time in the Northwest. They would play ball in the magnificent, brand-new ballpark called The Kingdome, which was a marvel of the sport’s world. The names that captivated the city were Ruppert Jones, the center fielder with the big swing, Leroy Stanton, who played right field and hit 27 home runs, and first baseman Dan Meyer, a fan favorite anchoring the middle of the lineup.
It was the beginning of something special, as the likes of Ken Griffey Jr. would arrive a decade later and steal the hearts of Mariners Nation forever.
