Rickey Henderson Stolen Base King Gold Tee
“Nothing’s impossible for Rickey. I don’t have enough fingers and toes to count out Rickey.” –Ricky Henderson
He was an athlete like we’ve never seen. The original “Man of Steal.” Rickey Henderson’s legs could’ve easily taken him to pro football. But instead, he chose baseball, and it was his hometown A’s who drafted him in 1976. Rickey ran through the minors, breaking records at Modesto, hitting .345 and stealing 95 bases. Good enough to be MVP.
He ran all the way to the Bigs in ’79, and from there he was off and running for real — four stints with his hometown A’s a legend of all legends, and the blur of all blurs. Gold Glove in ’81 was the gold standard. The Major League record for steals in ’82 with 130 swipes? That was his declaration of greatness. Hall of Fame? He got there safely.
