There’s a reason they call him “The Great One.”

Flash back to the scene of history. On September 30, 1972, at Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh, Roberto Clemente stepped up to the plate for what would be his final regular-season plate appearance. He entered the at-bat with 2,999 hits, one shy of becoming the first Latino player to ever hit 3,000. He was facing New York Mets pitcher Jon Matlack, with the entire city of Pittsburgh on pins and needles. Only one other player to wear a Pirates uniform had reached 3,000 career hits: Honus Wagner, who achieved the milestone 58 years earlier.

What did Clemente do in the critical moment? He slashed a double to left field, as the city embraced its greatest icon, who came to embody everything that is beautiful in the game of Baseball.
