In 1979, there was magic in the air. And some deep fly balls that seemed to never come down.

The ’79 Pittsburgh Pirates were a team of destiny. A never-say-die, super-tightknit Club of believers who rode its “We Are Family” motif all the way into the history books. Led by Willie “Pops” Stargell, they swept most valuable player awards in all categories, winning MLB All-Star Game MVP (Dave Parker), regular season NL MVP (Stargell, alongside Keith Hernandez), NLCS MVP (Stargell), and World Series MVP (Stargell again, who batted .400 with seven extra base hits).

But it was the Pirates flair for dramatics that year which won the world of Baseball over. After falling behind 3-1 in the World Series against a stacked Baltimore Orioles team, they came roaring back to win the next three games to steal the Fall Classic. By its end, everyone was singing Sister Sledge’s “We Are Family!”
