“When I put on my uniform, I feel I am the proudest man on Earth.”
And when he wore that uniform, Forbes Field turned electric.
Flash back to July 25, 1956. Roberto Clemente came to the plate with the bases loaded, and his Pittsburgh Pirates trailing the Chicago Cubs, 8-5. A 21-year-old sensation with a big arm from Puerto Rico, “The Great One” was about to put on an exhibition of blazing speed. He swung at the first pitch he saw, high and inside, and slashed it to the left field wall. As the Cubs outfielders chased for the ball as it caromed towards center, Clemente rounded second.
That’s when Pittsburgh’s manager Bobby Bragan saw his star player digging in as he held up the stop sign at third. Clemente had no intention of stopping. He rounded third like a blur on his way home. Clemente beat the throw yet missed the plate as he came in, only to reach back and touch it safely in dramatic fashion.
A walk-off inside-the-park grand slam?
That’s one of the reasons #21 is forever.
As part of the ROF x MLB collection, we have vintage Pittsburgh Pirates shorts, throwing back to the one and only Roberto Clemente!
