When the magic began, heroes were being born in Oakland. One of them, Gene Tenace, donned the cape in the Oakland A’s first ever World Series game against Cincinnati in 1972. Having hit only five home runs in the regular season, jaws dropped when he went yard on his first at bat in Game One. That was unexpected.

But when he did it again in his second at bat, he became an instant folk hero in the Bay Area.

It lives on in baseball lore, as it helped the A’s win the club’s first ever World Series game and kicked off a historic run by one of baseball’s all-time most beloved teams. That club, which went on to become a dynasty with back-to-back-to-back World Series titles from 1972-1974, tapped into the timeless feel of baseball in all its splendor, and therefore lives on forever.
