It was known as Zaire 74. The day when the “beat returned to the roots.” It was dubbed a “device for expanding consciousness” and “a spiritual commitment,” but it stood as a beautiful celebration of black culture. A sign outside the Stade Tata Raphael Stadium read, “Black power is sought everywhere, but it is already realized here in Zaire.” With the fight between Ali and Foreman — the iconic “Rumble in the Jungle” — very much alive in the backdrop, James Brown’s performance cast the vibes.

That night the Godfather of Soul was decked out in purple, and our purple sweatsuit pays homage to the most electric soul of all time, Mr. Dynamite, James Brown!
