“I was sad to see my father cry when Brazil lost the 1950 World Cup. That same day, I promised him that I would win a World Cup.”
Eight years later, in 1958 in Sweden, a 17-year-old Pele made good on his promise. He led Brazil to its first ever World Cup, becoming the youngest player in the tournament’s history to score a goal. A legend was born. Anthems were made. The game itself became part of the planet’s consciousness, and at the heart of it all was the great Pele.
