Unlike Jack Johnson, who was more of a notorious figure during his reign as HW Champ, Joe Louis was an American hero within the sports world and beyond. The Brown Bomber spent 12 years on top of the hill as heavyweight champion from 1937 until 1949, defending the title 25 times but he is most fondly remembered for defeating Germany's Max Schmeling during a time of great tension between the two nations as the rumblings of WWII were looming. Not only did Joe Louis perform in the ring, but he also took the role of national hero in his stride. For the first time in US history, there was a champion for all.
