May 6, 1945. Ruppert Stadium, Kansas City, Missouri. Two years before he broke the color barrier in baseball with the Brooklyn Dodgers, and two days before the end of World War II. That’s when Jackie Robinson strode to the plate and made his professional debut with the legendary Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro Leagues. He spent one year there in 1945, and thus began one of the greatest, most meaningful careers in baseball history.
