Opportunities were rare for African-Americans in 1908, but Jack Johnson could not be ignored. After 46 pro wins, and unbeaten in his last 19, Johnson was granted a shot at Tommy Burns, and at the height of the Jim Crow era, Jack Johnson became the first black world heavyweight boxing champion and changed the course of history.
His achievements during a time of unthinkable racism and complete racial division continue to inspire greatness across culture lines. As filmmaker Ken Burns said, "for more than 13 years Johnson was the most famous and the most notorious African American on Earth." Over a hundred years later, he stands as one of the most influential, as well.
We honour the game changing legacy of boxing’s great pioneer - Jack Johnson - with this striking stadium jacket.
