The date: February 6, 1967. The location: Astrodome, Houston, Texas. That was the night Ernie Terrell learned a lesson. In the lead-up to his fight with Muhammad Ali, Terrell kept referring to the champion by his birth name of Cassius Clay. Come fight night, with every jab that landed, and every cross that found its mark, and every hook that punished him, Ali repeatedly asked Terrell, “What’s my name? What’s my name?”

Toward the end of the one-sided bout, Terrell finally answered.

“It’s Muhammad Ali,” he said.
