"I am representing my people. I feel it, I know it, I've known it from day one, and it's the most important part of my journey."
Born and raised in San Diego, Rey Mysterio’s humble beginnings as a wrestler began at age 14, when he moved to Mexico to train under his uncle in the proud Mexican tradition of Lucha Libre. It was an experience that would shape him not only as a man and as a wrestler, but also as a Mexican-American. For Mysterio, donning “La Mascara” (the mask) was a sacred symbol that represented the culture of his ancestors. In it, he embodied powerful words like “honor,” “tradition,” “respect,” and “pride.”
His entire identity became inextricably tied to his roots as a luchador and to his Mexican heritage. As Mysterio carried on the legacy of the luchadores before him, he also elevated them to all new heights as a WWE three-time world champion, two-time Intercontinental Champion, two-time United States Champion, four-time Tag Team Champion, and a three-time Cruiserweight Champion.
We celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month in honor of Rey Mysterio, who paid the ultimate homage to his roots by reinventing both himself and WWE fights in the colorful style and spirit of the Lucha Libre to become regarded as the greatest cruiserweight in pro wrestling history.
