Dr. Maya Angelou was a leading light, a source of inspiration and guidance in the unending pursuit of self-development. She was the first African American and the first woman to recite a poem at the inauguration of a US president - "On the Pulse of Morning" for Bill Clinton. She was awarded the Presidential Medal of Arts and the Presidential Medal of Freedom - an award also bestowed upon Arthur Ashe and Rosa Parks.
