Satchel Paige’s career traces mid-20th century American history itself, as he sawed down batters on mounds from Chattanooga to Kansas City, from Birmingham to St. Louis. One of baseball’s true characters, Paige joked that his career spanned 100 years. In reality, it spanned five decades, but his legend lives on forever through the threads of history.
