Standing tall at 6-foot-4, when he took the mound he cast a long shadow. “Big Newk” had a nuclear fastball that could singe the hair on a batter’s arms as it popped into the catcher’s mitt. Don Newcombe was one of the most iconic pitchers of the mid-20th century. He lit up the Negro Leagues in his early career and tore up the Majors when, along with his Brooklyn Dodgers’ teammate Jackie Robinson, he helped bring the racial barrier crashing down.
